It's award season. Not just Nobel Prizes, but also Hugo Awards (reader-voted) for science fiction & fantasy, as well as the Rolex awards for some very deserving people doing good stuff for the community, wildlife or the natural environment or a mix.
"Hurricane reveals message from above" - foobar.
Researchers use photoluminescence spectroscopy. Could be very useful for Singapore/DSO. From scienceblog.
Also from scienceblog, but slightly older news, though already slashdotted (3 days after appearing on scienceblog), tiny mechanical switches outstrip magnetic storage. Punch cards, Difference Engine, Victorian steampunk, what else is new?
Does the macroscopic 4-dimensional (3 space, 1 time) universe we observe necessarily result from the assumptions that 1) cause precedes effect and 2) Einstein's special relativity holds? Actually, they used 4-dimensional building blocks (!!!), but contrary to intuition the everyday world we observe does not necessarily result. Only when they put in those 2 assumptions above did it appear. From crumb trail. Will comment if I manage to get a copy of the paper.

looks like i'll be needing to read much more of a. zee's book. :) that, and probably an infusion of stem cells to grow more neurons.
Hello! Thanks for referring me to that website regarding the competition. After reading through everything, I realise that I'm sorely lacking in photographic ability to probably even have one photograph in that magazine.
there are many many other talented, artistically gifted and technically brilliant photographers in our tiny yet growing community of photographers in singapore. Just check out clubsnap.com, most of the photographs being critiques are simply fantastic.
not to mention popular galleries in pbase.com. that one really takes the cake...
till then... I'll keep reading your blog... a little bit on the abstract side though, esp for the previous entry... =P
JH: Thx 4 the paper, I haven't really had time 2 look at it yet.
